Tiger Woods chips in on the 18th hole at the British Open

Tiger Woods ended his second round at the Open Championship with yet another fist-pump worthy moment.

On the 18th hole, Tiger landed his tee shot on the fairway 163 yards from the cup. But he misfired on his second shot and hooked it into the bunker to the right of hole (his first bunker of the first two rounds)

"God Almighty," he said disappointed by that wayward shot. The former world number one and 14-times major champion picked up shots at the fourth and six holes and after dropping one at the 11th he birdied the 16th and 18th to finish in third place on six-under 134.

Woods, without a major triumph since 2008, matched his opening 67 to stay firmly on course for his fourth British Open title.

Aurora Shooting Suspect Opens Fire At Colorado Movie Theater, Killing 12

A heavily armed man entered a movie theater in suburban Denver early Friday and opened fire, killing at least 12 people and injuring 50 others. The incident, which took place about 12:30 a.m. at the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colo., occurred during midnight screenings of the new Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises. This is a horrific event," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said during a news conference. The gunman, who was wearing a gas mask, reportedly set off a smoke or tear gas bomb then walked up to the front of the screen in one of the theaters and opened fire.
When the movie patrons realized the attack was real and not part of the movie, pandemonium erupted and they began to flee. The film continued to play on the screen as bloodied customers took refuge outside. According to witnesses on the scene, some of the bullets also went through the walls of an adjacent theater, injuring patrons.

Soon after receiving a flood of 911 calls, hundreds of police officers, ambulance and emergency crews arrived on the scene.

The suspect was found near a car behind the theater and arrested. He was dressed in black, carrying a knife, rifle and a handgun, and wearing a bulletproof vest.

"He did not resist," police spokesman Frank Fania. "He did not put up a fight."

The shooter's identity has not been released but he is thought to be in his early 20s. A motive for the attack is unknown.

Police also searched the suspect's North Aurora home after he spoke of "possible explosives in his residence," Oates said. Authorities evacuated the building as a precautionary measure.

The police originally announced that 14 people had been killed in the attack, but revised the death toll around 7:45 a.m. ET, NBC News reported.

At this time, there is no evidence of additional shooters.

President Barack Obama, who is in Palm Beach, Fla., was notified of the shooting by Homeland Security Advisor John Brennan at 5:26 a.m. ET. He released the following statement: Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my Administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family. All of us must have the people of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends, and neighbors, and we must stand together with them in the challenging hours and days to come.GOP challenger Mitt Romney said he and his wife Ann are "deeply saddened" by the shooting. We are praying for the families and loved ones of the victims during this time of deep shock and immense grief. We expect that the person responsible for this terrible crime will be quickly brought to justice."
The theater where the attack took place is just about 25 miles from Columbine High School, where two students shot and killed 13 people in 1999.

Deadly Blast Hits Israeli Tourist Bus in Bulgaria

An explosion has killed at least three people on a bus carrying Israeli tourists in the eastern Bulgarian city of Burgas, Bulgarian officials say.

More than 20 people were also injured when the bus exploded at Burgas airport, by the Black Sea.

Witnesses told Israeli TV that someone boarded the bus and a huge explosion immediately followed.

Reuters news agency says Burgas airport has now been closed and flights are being diverted to Varna.

Israeli officials said the passengers from a Tel-Aviv-Burgas flight boarded the bus shortly after 1700 local time (1400 GMT).

"We don't know if it was a terror attack. We do know it was an explosion," Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Paul Hirschson was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency. The wounded were ferried to nearby hospitals and the airport was closed. A doctor on duty at the Burgas city hospital told Bulgarian radio that there were 27 people hurt — and at least three had severe injuries. He was not identified.

Officials said Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman had spoken with his Bulgarian counterpart and was being kept abreast of the developments.

Israel has been accused by Iran of being behind deadly attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists. Israel has never admitted to involvement, but it and others have accused Iran of alleged reprisal missions, including a February bombing in New Delhi that wounded an Israeli diplomat's wife and the discovery of a cache of explosives in Bangkok that Thai officials claim was linked a plot to target Israeli diplomats

Israel has blamed Iran for the New Delhi explosion, as well as two others, one the same day in the former Soviet republic of Georgia and the other the next day in Thailand. Iran has denied involvement.

Syria :Suicide bomb kills defence minister

A suicide bomber struck the National Security building in the Syrian capital Wednesday, killing the defense minister and wounding the interior minister in a brazen attack on the seat of government power, state-run TV said.

Defense Minister Dawoud Rajha, 65, a former army general, is the most senior government official to be killed in the Syrian civil war as rebels battle to oust President Bashar Assad. Interior Minister Mohammed Shaar was in stable condition, state-run TV said.

Although it was unclear who was behind the attack, the high-level assassination could signal a turning point in the 16-month conflict as the violence becomes increasingly chaotic.

The capital also has seen four straight days of clashes pitting government troops against rebels — an unprecedented challenge to government rule in the tightly controlled capital.

Rajha was the most senior Christian government official in Syria. Assad appointed him to the post last year. His death will resonate with Syria's minority Christian population, who make up about 10 percent of Syria's population and have generally stood by the regime. At least 45 people were said to have been killed in the conflict.

For the past three days, rebels have been clashing with troops in an operation called ‘Damascus Volcano’ in a final combat for the capital.

Earlier in the day, Syrian President Bashar-al Assad government’s officials denied rebels’ claims to launch an ‘all-out offensive’ in Damascus.

In an attempt to restore peace in a long-time protesting Syria, UN-appointed Arab League’s peace envoy, Kofi Annan held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow yesterday.

Garcia defeats Kahn for light-welterweight crown

American Danny Garcia knocked out Britain’s Amir Khan in the fourth round to add the WBA light-welterweight crown to his WBC super-lightweight title in Las Vegas on Saturday.
Khan, 26-3 (18 KOs), looked the superior fighter early on, showing vastly superior hand speed as he landed right hands behind a long jab and opened up a cut on Garcia’s eye with a left hook.

I was a little surprised the ref stopped it,” he said. “I thought he was going to let us continue. My mind was clear, and I thought my legs were okay.
[But] it wasn’t my night. I respect Danny. He was countering very well against me. I got a little complacent and he took advantage and he caught me.”
Garcia said he had felt the Briton had underestimated him.
We knew Khan was going to come out fast because he thought I had no power,” said Garcia who improved to 24-0 (15 KOs).
But I waited and stepped up and used the speed and power I have. And it worked.”
The loss was Khan’s second successive defeat after he lost his WBA and IBF titles on a split decision to Lamont Peterson last December.
Peterson subsequently tested positive for synthetic testosterone, which he admitted he took before the Khan fight, and the WBA reinstated Khan as champion on Thursday.

David Haye Defeats Dereck Chisora: 5th Round Knockout Decides Grudge Fight

LONDON -- David Haye knocked out Dereck Chisora in the fifth round of their all-British heavyweight grudge fight at Upton Park on Saturday.Five months after they brawled in Munich at a news conference, Haye put Chisora down for good with a left hook, but Haye (26-2, 24 KOs) was coming under severe pressure until the knockout in an exciting fight before 30,000 spectators.
The fight panned out as expected. Former world cruiserweight and heavyweight champ Haye had speed and a harder punch, while Chisora (15-4, 9 KOs) used his extra 37 pounds to crowd Haye and land threatening blows. They continued hitting after the bell in the second and third rounds, and Chisora avoided trouble in the fourth when Haye let up. In the decisive round, Chisora survived an eight count but another Haye left hook dropped him and referee Luis Pabon waved it all over.

No world titles were at stake in the scheduled 10-rounder, which was sanctioned by the Luxembourg federation because the British Boxing Board of Control wouldn't license either fighter after their shameful antics in Munich. The mutual dislike between them helped to attract large crowd – more than attended the Lennox Lewis-Frank Bruno heavyweight title bout in 1993

Obama for America TV Ad: "Firms"

An unrelenting President Barack Obama jabbed at Mitt Romney's record with a private equity firm in an ad Saturday that aimed to keep his rival on the defensive just as the Republican challenger's campaign hoped to take advantage of poor economic data to gain an edge on the incumbent.
Obama met Romney's plea for an apology for the attacks with a mocking ad that charged that the firm shipped American jobs to China and Mexico, that Romney has personal wealth in investments in Switzerland, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, and that as Massachusetts governor, he sent state jobs to India.
"Mitt Romney's not the solution. He's the problem," the ads says as Romney is heard singing "America the Beautiful."
Pressure was building on Romney from within his own party to be more forthcoming with his finances, a day after he declared he would not release past income tax returns beyond his 2010 tax records and, before the November election, his 2011 taxes.Obama said the questions raised in numerous media reports and highlighted by his own campaign aides were a legitimate part of the race for the White House.

"Ultimately, I think, Mr. Romney is going to have to answer those questions because if he aspires to being president, one of the things you learn is you're ultimately responsible for the conduct of your operations," Obama said in an interview with the District of Columbia's WJLA-TV.

Romney called that "Chicago-style politics at its worst" and accused the president, who's from Chicago, and his campaign of trying to shift attention from the economy and unemployment situation.

In trying to put the matter behind him and return the campaign to his economic arguments, Romney declared he had "no role whatsoever in the management" of the company after he left to take over the Salt Lake City Olympic Games in early 1999.

Romney acknowledged that he would have benefited financially from Bain's operations even after he left management of the firm to others. That could open him up to criticism that he gained from investment in companies that sent jobs overseas.

"All of the investors participate in the success or failure of various investments, just like you do as a shareholder of an enterprise," Romney told CBS.

Bain Capital said in a statement that Romney "remained the sole stockholder for a time while formal ownership was being documented and transferred to the group of partners who took over management of the firm in 1999."

Blake griffin knee injury

Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin injured his left knee during a scrimmage at Team USA training camp and is returning to Los Angeles to be examined by the Clippers' doctors.USA Basketball said in a statement that Griffin reported he was experiencing discomfort in the knee after the scrimmage and will miss Thursday night's exhibition game against the Dominican Republic (9 p.m. ET, ESPN).

The Clippers said in a statement that Griffin would undergo an MRI exam once he returns to Los Angeles and then will be evaluated by Dr. Neal ElAttrache of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic on Sunday.

Griffin did not show any obvious signs of an injury on Wednesday, and a source told ESPN.com's Marc Stein that Griffin's knee "swelled up" after the scrimmage.

New Orleans Hornets rookie Anthony Davis, the NBA's 2012 No. 1 overall pick out of Kentucky, has been asked to report to Team USA training camp in Las Vegas. Davis will dress for Team USA's game against the Dominican Republic, USA Basketball announced Thursday. But USA Basketball had asked him to stick around on the select team of young players that was training against the Americans, in case an injury popped up. He was in Los Angeles on Wednesday for the ESPY Awards, but traveled back to Las Vegas on Thursday.

If Griffin is unable to return, Davis' rebounding and shot-blocking would be a welcome addition on a U.S. team that has New York's Tyson Chandler as its only remaining center. Players can be replaced on the roster in case of injury any time up to 48 hours before the start of the Olympics.

Griffin was hurt during the playoffs and struggled through the pain before the Clippers were ousted in the second round by San Antonio. After taking a couple of weeks off, he was back on the court and had been playing well for the Americans, who planned to use him at center.

The Americans lost two centers, Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh, to injuries before camp, along with Derrick Rose and Dwyane Wade. Chris Paul, Griffin's Clippers teammate, sprained his right thumb on the first day of camp and has been sitting out scrimmages.

Nigerian fuel tanker fire kills 95

A tanker truck caught fire and exploded in Nigeria on Thursday shortly after breaking down, killing at least 95 people who then rushed to the scene to scoop fuel, an official said.At least 50 others were injured in the incident in the oil-rich southern Niger Delta region, said Rivers State spokeswoman Ibim Semenitari.
Despite decades as an oil producing region, the majority of those living in the Delta remain desperately poor and mostly without access to proper medical care, education or work. Anger over the situation on several occasions has driven young people to attack foreign oil firms based there and steal fuel from pipelines.
Yushau Shuaib, a spokesman for the West African country's emergency management agency, said the 95 people were killed in the explosion as they ran to the truck to take fuel.

The truck accident took place near Okogbe town in the Niger Delta — a region of swamps, mangroves and creeks roughly the same size as South Carolina. The cause was not immediately known, although fatal crashes are common in Nigeria where decades-old roads are normally pitted with potholes and drivers frequently fail to observe traffic laws. Moreover, corruption often hinders or slows down road maintenance projects.Environmental activist Nnimmo Bassey, however, was quick to blame the truck's accident on country's notoriously bad roads. This tells a tragic story about the state of national infrastructure and the poverty of the people," said Bassey.

Mitt Romney Booed at NAACP Over Obamacare

Mitt Romney was booed Wednesday at the NAACP conference for promising to repeal the president's signature health care reform law, bringing him to an awkward halt in the middle of an otherwise civilly-received pitch for black voters.

It was an awkward moment that forced him to go off script, after giving a somewhat pained smile as the booing continued.

"I'm going to eliminate every non-essential, expensive program I can find, that includes Obamacare, and I'm going to work to reform and save --" Romney said before being interrupted for about 15 seconds.

"You know, there was a survey of the Chamber of Commerce -- they carried out a survey of their members, about 1,500 surveyed, and uh, they asked them what effect Obamacare would have on their plans, and three-quarters of them said it made them less likely to hire people," he said when the booing stopped. "So I say, again, that if our priority is jobs, and that's my priority, that's something I'd change and replace."

Romney wasn't entering a crowd that was likely to be convinced: a vast majority of black voters went for President Barack Obama in 2008. Still, Romney made an attempt at the Houston conference to tout his policies and say they would better serve the black community on education, unemployment and traditional marriage.Blacks are widely expected to back Obama, the first African-American president, in November, but the crucial question in a neck-and-neck race is whether Romney can lure enough black voters to make a difference in swing states like Florida and North Carolina.

McCain won a dismal five percent of the black vote, and Romney is aiming to bring the figure closer to the 11 percent that George W. Bush won in 2004.

His address to the NAACP can be seen as an effort to make Romney, a multimillionaire former businessman and investor with a reputation of not connecting with everyday voters, appear more attractive to a diverse electorate.

He has a daunting task. Republican-led efforts in several states to require voters to present government-issued ID at polling booths is seen as having a disproportionate effect on minorities and the poor, who vote more Democratic.

And he wants Bush-era tax cuts extended for all Americans including the rich, a position that might not sit well with working class voters.

Robert Kraft and Ricki Noel Lander Star in Some Weird, Creepy Audition Video

What you are about to see is, well, just really strange. Unless you don't think watching an NFL owner participate in an audition tape is bizarre, that is.
Bob Kraft appeared in an audition tape with his girlfriend, Ricki Noel Lander, and delivered a performance reminiscent of Robert De Niro in Raging Bull. OK, so actually his performance was closer to Keanu Reeves acting in a small-town theater company's interpretation of Raging Bull, but who's counting?Let's just say Bob won't be appearing on Dancing with the Stars anytime soon. He's all chips and no salsa. I think he calls that dance move "The Doggie Paddle."But the punch scene changed everything (cough). Oh yes, the punch scene. So riveting. So much emotion. You could really feel his character's anger in that moment. The beast inside him awoke. His rage became our rage. His struggle became our struggle.
I don't know if Lander will get the part, but I know this much—they better find a place for Kraft in that movie. His talent has gone undiscovered for too long. The world needs him on the silver screen.Oh, and kudos to Kraft for helping out his girlfriend with the audition tape. I'm sure he didn't plan on becoming a star actor in the process.

The crowds watched as he prepared on the U.S. side of the roaring falls, made his cautious decline toward the wettest portion of wire and then up toward the Canadian side.

The seventh-generation member of the famed Flying Wallendas took steady, measured steps amid the rushing mist over the falls as an estimated crowd of 125,000 people on the Canadian side and 4,000 on the American side watched. Along the way, he calmly prayed aloud.

Matt Cain Throws the 22nd Perfect Game in MLB History!

Matt Cain powered through the Houston Astros on Wednesday night, striking out a career-high 14 and tossing the first perfect game in San Francisco Giants history.

Cain's dominant outing in a 10-0 win over the Astros was the second perfect game in the major leagues this season and the 22nd of all time.

Chicago White Sox pitcher Philip Humber tossed this year's first perfecto on April 21 against the Seattle Mariners.During an on-field interview with the studio crew of "MLB Tonight" on MLB Network, Cain was still coming to grips with the weight of his accomplishment.

"Honestly, I have no idea what it means. This is unspeakable right now. This is unbelievable," Cain marveled. "This is something that, obviously, [is] part of history, something that I'm going to remember forever. This is truly amazing right now."

The Giants put crooked numbers on the board in four of the first five frames to jump out to a large lead. By the later innings, the only drama remaining involved Cain's bid for a perfecto.

The closest call for Cain was saved by a stellar catch in right field by Gregor Blanco in the seventh inning to rob Schafer of what looked to a sure hit to the gap. An inning earlier, Giants left fielder Melky Cabrera also made a terrific snag to keep the Astros off the base paths.

See Ricky Laforge, 'New York Shower Hammers' Player, Scores Amazing Game-Winning Run

In extra innings at the Pennsylvania Kickball Classic, a kickball tournament in Harrisburg, Penn., Ricky Laforge of the "New York Shower Hammers" scored the game-winning run by somersaulting over the ball and reaching home plate, just before a player from the opposing team could tag him.

But the play didn't go uncontested. A player from Deja Vu Dynasty, opposing team, disagreed with the referee on the call. And as the slow-motion replay shows, it was very close. Even the guys on ESPN's Around the Horn couldn't come to a consensus on the call.

Netherlands 1-2 Germany UEFA Euro 2012 All goals and highlights

It was bad enough when they used to win with dour efficiency.

These days, though, we have to suffer Germany frolicking to victory with a swagger in their stride and with a crafty wink to the galleries.

Chelsea supporters would not have recognised Mario Gomez, the Bayern Munich striker who had the mother of all shockers in last month's Champions League Final, but filled the onion bag with a couple of absolute gems last night.

For an hour, at least, Arsenal fans would have performed a double-take at Robin Van Persie, the Footballer of the Year whose golden boots seemed to have turned to lead here in the Metalist Stadium these past few days.t might have been an exaggeration to claim that Holland still had hope but there seemed nothing left to lose. The introduction of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Rafael van der Vaart was intended to add the sort of edge that might cut the opposition's lead. Even so, the principal difficulty lay in keeping this contest taut.

There was a danger that Holland would gradually be drained of whatever traces of optimism were still left in them. Some of the hunger was gone from the match, but Germany were thorough, striving to attack if only to drain a little more hope out of the opposition.

Even their defender Mats Hummels demanded two saves in quick succession from Stekelenburg. Some of the tautness went out of the game, with Germany confident of the points and Holland as convinced of inevitable defeat.

These are sides that each have a taste for adventure, but only Germany seemed wise to indulge it. Holland, for their part, strove to show that there was still hope within them. Jérôme Boateng suffered for that when an attempt from Lukas Podolski smashed against him.

Holland, all the same, had not despaired. The gap was closed to 2-1 by Van Persie's unanswerable drive from the left. Belatedly there was tension to the night, but it soon vanished once more.

Euro 2012 Violence: Russian, Polish Hooligans Clash In Warsaw

Russian football fans clashed with police and Poland supporters in separate incidents in Warsaw tonight, shortly before the two teams were to meet in an emotionally charged match at Euro 2012.

Police said 10 people were injured; seven Poles, two Russians and one German. In what appeared to be the most violent incident, Polish football hooligans were seen attacking Russians, who responded violently.

The two sides, made up of dozens of men, kicked and beat each other in the face, while flares could be seen exploding in their midst.

Several people lay injured and bleeding on the ground, with one of them appearing to be seriously hurt. Poland and Russia fans were also seen fighting and throwing stones outside the stadium.

There were a number of other incidents as well, which came as about 5,000 Russia fans waving their country's flag marched to the stadium in a show of patriotism seen as provocative to many Poles. One Russian who didn't have tickets to the game, but made the two-day car trip from Moscow simply to be in be the city, said it was wrong for the Russians to march in Warsaw given the countries' troubled history.

"The march, it wasn't right. It was a provocation. It shouldn't happen like this. But there are also aggressive Poles and we are scared here," said the 26-year-old man, who gave only his first name, Petya.

He and a friend had hoped to cross a bridge leading from the city center to the stadium to soak up the atmosphere in the area. But they gave up that notion and were sitting outside, sipping on beers from a distance, and were about to go watch the match on TV in an apartment with friends.

In recent days, Polish media have tried to stir up nationalistic sentiments over the match, suggesting the encounter would be more than a simple football competition. Newspapers Monday were full of dramatic references to Poland's victorious 1920 battle against the Bolshevik Army, known as the Miracle on the Vistula.

LA Kings win first Stanley Cup

The Los Angeles Kings' 45-year quest for an NHL title ended Monday night with an early flurry of power-play goals, followed by two periods of unbearable anticipation - right up to the moment when Dustin Brown snatched the Stanley Cup from Commissioner Gary Bettman.

Brown skated to center ice and thrust the 36-pound silver trophy skyward, the captain never flinching under the weight. Long-suffering L.A. fans, who had never even seen hockey's greatest prize, went crazy.

The Kings are NHL champions for the first time, and all the men in black played a role in this Tinseltown blockbuster.

Jeff Carter and Trevor Lewis scored two goals apiece, playoff MVP Jonathan Quick made 17 saves in his latest stellar performance, and the Kings beat the New Jersey Devils 6-1 in Game 6 of the finals, becoming the first eighth-seeded playoff team to win the league title.

Brown had a goal and two assists for Los Angeles, which ended its spectacular 16-4 postseason run in front of a crowd including several dozen Kings faithful who have been at rinkside since the team's birth as an expansion franchise in 1967. Every other year ended unhappily.Brown scored 53 seconds in, slickly redirecting Drew Doughty's low pass in front for his first goal since the Western Conference finals opener. Brown's physical play and goal-scoring in the first-round series against Vancouver set a tone for the entire playoffs, but New Jersey had effectively shut him down until Game 6.

Carter then scored his seventh goal of the postseason after Brown walked the puck out of the corner and fired a shot at Brodeur's glove side while skating away from the net. The midseason acquisition has been a dependable scorer ever since he was reunited with longtime Philadelphia teammate Mike Richards on the Kings' second line.

With the Los Angeles crowd on its feet, the Kings added another as rookie Dwight King ferociously drove the net and left a rebound for Lewis, who tucked it home for his first goal in 18 games. Staples Center was deafening for the rest of the first period, and Los Angeles went up 4-0 just 90 seconds into the second when Brown found Carter unchecked in the slot for a one-timer.

NOTES: The Kings are the first team to clinch the Stanley Cup on their home ice since the Anaheim Ducks did it five years ago. They're also just the second No. 8 seed ever to make the finals. Edmonton lost in seven games in 2006. ... Only four Kings had previously won the Stanley Cup – Dustin Penner, Scuderi, Justin Williams and Colin Fraser, who didn't contribute much to Chicago's 2010 run. ... David Beckham, Matthew Perry, James Gandolfini, Alyssa Milano and My Chemical Romance attended the game. My Chemical Romance's "Welcome to the Black Parade" has become the black-jerseyed Kings' unofficial anthem after its incorporation into a clever pregame video featuring photos of several Kings as kids.

Madonna Flashes Nipple at Istanbul Concert

The queen of pop is known for crossing lines on and off stage. But she won't be claiming this slip of the nipple was a wardrobe malfunction: Madonna made it perfectly clear (see for yourself in the NSFW video, below) that she was deliberately flashing the crowd of roughly 55,000 people in Turkey's largest city.

The singer, 53, was performing a rendition of her 1995 hit, "Human Nature," when her dance routine turned into a strip tease. Her fans cheered for her as she began taking off her shirt and undoing her pants. The dance culminated in Madonna pulling down her bra to briefly expose her right breast. The singer is in the middle of her world tour, promoting her new album, MDNA.Nipplegate II is the second time the singer has stirred a controversy in just over a week - during the first night of her world tour to promote new album "MDNA" the singer flashed an image of France's National Front leader Marine Le Pen on video screens during her show with a swastika superimposed over the politician's forehead.

Le Pen has since vowed to sue the singer if she replays the image, according to the UK's Daily Mail Newspaper - especially if she does during her Paris show next month.

But perhaps Le Pen's comment about the stunt says it all: "We understand how old singers who need to get people talking about them go to such extremes."

Ireland 1-3 Croatia Full Highlights (Euro 2012 - Group C) All Goals & Highlights Video

The Republic of Ireland had yearned for a return to a grand tournament for the first time since the 2002 World Cup, but they fell behind in the second minute and, despite wholehearted effort, had to accept the superiority of Croatia. In view of encounters to come with Spain and Italy, the prospects have darkened. A result of this sort was cruel in its stern reminder of the challenges posed by an occasion of such importance.

There was a touch of altitude sickness in that early opener. The exasperation of the manager, Giovanni Trapattoni, could only be guessed at as Croatia took the lead with a disturbingly simple goal. Darijo Srna crossed from the right and a rather gentle header from Mario Mandzukic went past the goalkeeper, Shay Given.Everton striker Jelavic made it 2-1 just before the interval with a clever chipped finish after a sliced Ward clearance landed at his feet.

And the game was as good as over four minutes after the restart when a second Mandzukic header found the back off the net, this time via the head of the unlucky Given as the ball bounced back into play off the post.

The Irish regrouped and were denied what appeared a blatant penalty when Gordon Schildenfeld went through the back of Keane on the edge of the box.

However, even though the Republic's luck had deserted them, Croatia continued to look in control, technically superior and able to step up the pace if required.

They had chances to extend their lead, the best of which saw a fabulous sweeping move almost end with Ivan Rakitic firing just wide from 20 yards.

The Irish also had opportunities in the closing stages, but Keith Andrews screwed two shots wide and wasted a good headed chance.

Timothy Bradley defeats Manny Pacquiao

LAS VEGAS -- Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao put on an outstanding show, but it was the judges who will be the big story for the next week or so.

Pacquiao landed 94 more punches than Bradley according to CompuBox, but it was not enough as the judges stunningly awarded a split-decision win to Bradley, who lifted the World Boxing Organization welterweight title from Pacquiao with the victory.
"I thought I won the fight," said Bradley, who said he hurt his ankle in the second round. "I didn't think he was as good as everybody says he is. I didn't feel a lot of his power."
It was an excellent back-and-forth bout, but Pacquiao seemed to control it by landing more, landing at a higher percentage and landing the harder punches.
Judges C.J. Ross and Duane Ford had it for Bradley, 115-113. Jerry Roth had it for Pacquiao, 115-113. Bradley won the final round on all three cards which pulled out the bout for him.Pacquiao had vowed to look impressive against Bradley after struggling in his last outing with Juan Manuel Marquez, a fight many thought he lost. And he did early, landing good long left hands while beating Bradley to the punch on most exchanges.

"He hurt me a couple of times with his left," Bradley said. "He's a beast."

Trainer Freddie Roach told Pacquiao after the 10th round that he had control of the fight, and urged him to fight hard the final two rounds.

"You have six minutes to go, son," Roach said. "It's your fight."

But it wasn't Pacquiao's fight, with Bradley getting credit for winning some of the close middle and later rounds. After the 11th round Bradley went back to his corner and trainer Joel Diaz told him he needed to win the final round.

"I listened to my corner," Bradley said. "I got to give him a rematch now."

Arum said there will be one on Nov. 10, though he thought Pacquiao won easily, as did most writers at ringside.

"I'll make a lot of money off the rematch, but this was outrageous," Arum said.

It was the biggest fight of Bradley's career and it came with a minimum $5 million payday. The rematch will be even richer, though Pacquiao's loss could damage any plans for a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather did not see the fight because he is serving a sentence on a domestic abuse charge at a jail a few miles from the MGM Grand.

Manuel Preciado Tragic death

Jose Mourinho, the Real Madrid manager, has led the tributes for Manuel Preciado, who died on Thursday morning just 24 hours after being named as the new Villarreal coach. He was 54. Relegated Villarreal announced on Wednesday that they had reached an agreement for Preciado to take charge of the club next season as they sought an immediate return to La Liga.

Preciado, who had parted company with former club Sporting Gijon in January, had been set to be presented as the Villarreal's new manager on Friday, but news broke on Thursday morning that the Cantabrian had died of heart attack overnight in Valencia.

Villarreal president Fernando Roig said: ''He was a great person for football. We are going to support his family and try to help them at this difficult time.'' Preciado, a native of the Cantabria region in northern Spain, began coaching in the third division in 1995. He led Levante from the second to the first division in the 2003-04 season, and also guided Sporting back to the topflight for the first time in ten years in 2007-08.

He coached Sporting for a total of five and a half seasons before a poor start last year led to him being fired midway through the season. Sporting did not recover and was relegated, along with Villarreal and Racing.

Preciado was a fan favorite in Gijon and one of the most charismatic managers in Spain, known for his frank and entertaining manner of addressing both press and players alike.

Preciado's 232 games for Sporting were second only to Jose Diaz Novoa's 282. Sporting said Preciado's name was "written into the history of the club in golden letters."

As a player, he also had stints with Mallorca, Alaves, Ourense, Linares and Gimnastic de Torrelavega.

Villarreal President Fernando Roig said the club will try to look after Preciado's family.

"We will give support to his family, and we will all try to respect their feelings and help them in this difficult moment," he said.

Preciado is a former player with several clubs including Racing Santander and had also previously coached teams including Racing, Levante, Murcia and Sporting Gijon.ints with Mallorca, Alaves, Ourense, Linares and Gimnastic de Torrelavega.

For Villarreal, the tragedy overshadows a dire season marked by injuries to key players, including striker Giuseppe Rossi, which saw it fall from playing in the Champions League to relegation that was confirmed in the closing minutes of the final round.

Queen 'humbled' by Diamond Jubilee celebrations

The Queen has called her Diamond Jubilee "a humbling experience", saying she had been "touched deeply" by seeing so many people celebrating together.

In a message to the nation, she thanked all those who organised the events.

Festivities culminated in an appearance by the senior royals on the Buckingham Palace balcony in front of huge crowds to watch an RAF flypast.

But the Queen's consort, Prince Philip, was absent from her side as he remains in hospital with a bladder infection.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex visited the Duke of Edinburgh on Tuesday afternoon."But Prince Philip and I want to take this opportunity to offer our special thanks and appreciation to all those who have had a hand in organising these Jubilee celebrations.

"It has been a massive challenge, and I am sure that everyone who has enjoyed these festive occasions realises how much work has been involved.

"I hope that memories of all this year's happy events will brighten our lives for many years to come. I will continue to treasure and draw inspiration from the countless kindnesses shown to me in this country and throughout the Commonwealth.

Barack Obama Sings Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen

Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" is possibly 2012's most inescapable smash hit – even President Obama isn't safe from its clutches. In this video, Fadi Saleh, a.k.a. Barackdubs, mashes up the track with voice clips taken from various speeches, creating the illusion of the Commander in Chief singing along to the song. Saleh's meticulous mixing is impressive, with each word individually cut to match the instrumental, creating an outlandish and charming version of an already endearing track.

Canadian Psycho Luka Magnotta Arrested in Germany

Luka Rocco Magnotta, Canada’s most-wanted fugitive, was arrested in Berlin on Monday, less than a week after international police launched a worldwide manhunt for the alleged killer from Montreal.

A Berlin police spokesman told The Canadian Press that Magnotta was arrested at about 2 p.m. local time in or near an Internet cafe in the German capital. Montreal police later confirmed his capture.

Magnotta, 29, is facing five charges in Montreal, including first-degree murder, in the brutal slaying and dismemberment of Jun Lin, a Chinese national who was studying at Concordia University.

Lin’s torso was found packed inside a suitcase on a Montreal curb outside Magnotta’s apartment building last Tuesday. Other body parts, including a hand and foot, were mailed to the offices of political parties in Ottawa.German police spokesman Thomas Neuendorf told CBC News that Berlin authorities have arrested Magnotta.

Magnotta, dubbed the "Butcher of Montreal" by European media, was spotted in Paris on the weekend, at a local café and in a hotel.

The Montreal man is wanted in connection with the murder and dismemberment of 33-year-old Chinese student Jun Lin. Parts of Lin's remains were discovered last week after they were sent to the federal Liberal and Conservative parties in Ottawa.Authorities in Canada had issued a countrywide arrest warrant for Magnotta and he was added to Interpol's list of wanted persons. Magnotta faces charges of first-degree murder, committing an indignity on a dead body, publishing obscene material, mailing "obscene, indecent, immoral or scurrilous" material and criminally harassing Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and several unnamed members of Parliament, police said.

Investigators believe Magnotta initially flew to France from Montreal after committing the murder. Brigitte Kuster, mayor of Paris's 17th district, said Magnotta was caught on surveillance video at a restaurant and possibly a hotel in the city over the weekend.

Miss USA 2012 Is Rhode Island's Olivia Culpo

Miss Rhode Island is now Miss USA. Olivia Culpo, who represented the smallest state in the country, was named Miss USA 2012 on Sunday night, winning the pageant in Las Vegas. In the final round, Culpo had to answer a question from Twitter, a first for the pageant, which was held at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. She was asked, “Would you feel it would be fair that a transgender woman wins the Miss USA title over a natural-born woman?"

She took a pause and said that she has embraced the Miss Universe Organization’s decision to allow transgender competitors to compete in the pageant. "I do think that that would be fair, but I can understand that people would be a little apprehensive to take that road because there is a tradition of natural-born women, but today where there are so many surgeries and so many people out there who have a need to change for a happier life, I do accept that because I believe it's a free country," she told the audience.Culpo follows Alyssa Campanella and will represent the United States at Miss Universe in December.

If Culpo can't fulfill her duties, she will be replaced by Miss Maryland, Nana Meriwether, who was the runner-up.

Judges included Rob Kardashian, Joe Jonas, Chef Cat Cora, Arsenio Hall, and Mary Lou Henner.

For the fifth year in a row, the Donald Trump-owned contest was held at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. Culpo was established as the odds-on favorite by the Wynn Las Vegas sports book prior to the competition at 9 to 1 odds.

Nigeria Plane Crash Kills 153

LAGOS, Nigeria — A commercial airliner crashed into a densely populated neighborhood in Nigeria's largest city on Sunday, killing all 153 people on board and others on the ground in the worst air disaster in nearly two decades for the troubled nation.

The cause of the Dana Air crash remained unknown Sunday night, as firefighters and police struggled to put out the flames around the wreckage of the Boeing MD83 aircraft. Authorities could not control the crowd of thousands gathered around to see the crash site, with some crawling over the plane's broken wings and standing on a still-smoldering landing gear.

Harold Demuren, the director-general of Nigeria's Civil Aviation Authority, said all on board the flight were killed in the crash. Lagos state government said in a statement that 153 people were on the flight traveling from Nigeria's central capital of Abuja to Lagos in the nation's southwest. The Dana Air flight destined for Lagos from Abuja crashed in the early afternoon into a building, said Akande Iyiola, zone coordinator with the emergency management agency. The neighborhood was about five miles from the city's airport, said Abbah.

The crash triggered three house fires, said Labaran Ahmed, a rescue officer with the agency.

Speaking to CNN around 6:15 p.m., Sidi described the scene as "devastation."A military helicopter flew overhead. The sound of the crowd was also occasionally punctuated by the noise of aircraft still landing at the airport.

Lagos' international airport is a major hub for West Africa and saw 2.3 million passengers pass through it in 2009, according to the most recent statistics provided by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

In August 2010, the U.S. announced it had given Nigeria the FAA's Category 1 status, its top safety rating that allows the nation's domestic carriers to fly directly to the U.S.

The Nigerian government said it also now has full radar coverage of the entire nation. However, in a nation where the state-run electricity company is in tatters, state power and diesel generators sometimes both fail at airports, making radar screens go blank.

Toronto Eaton Centre Mall Shooting

A gunman fired shots in a busy food court in one of Canada's busiest malls Saturday killing one man and injuring eight, police said.

Toronto police constable Victor Kwong said two people were in critical condition. He said the person who was killed died at the scene. Some of the injuries came when people were trampled on and pushed. He said the suspect had not been apprehended.

Witnesses said multiple shots were fired in the food court in Toronto's downtown Eaton Centre and that hundreds of panicked shoppers sprinted for the exits. The mall was evacuated.

Swarms of people watched from outside as an injured man with visible bullet wounds was wheeled out on a stretcher."All of a sudden a herd of people were just running toward us, a massive crowd of people screaming, running, freaking out," said Hannah Stewart, 21, who was shopping in the mall at the time. "We saw this girl, sitting on the ground, and she had blood on her toes."

That girl appeared to have been one of the victims and told Stewart she had just been shot.

At that point, police poured into the centre and began herding people outside.

"All these cops came running up and they started screaming at us to back off," Stewart said. "They were screaming at us to run and get out.”

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie was also in the mall when the shooting took place and was one of the first to take to Twitter to break the news.

"Pretty sure someone just let off a round bullets in eaton center mall .. Wow just sprinted out of the mall," he tweeted. "People sprinting up the stairs right from where we just were ... Wow."This shooting was not only wanton and incredibly dangerous, but also reckless as to the safety of others," Blair said, adding that he does not know where the suspect might have fled.

Police are talking to witnesses and scouring video evidence of the shooting, which took place in the food court area. They were first alerted to the incident shortly before 6:30 p.m. ET.

"It's terrible when you hear something like this. My heart goes out to the families that have been affected by this terrible crime," said Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.

A call to the mall confirmed that the shopping center was on lockdown. No other details were available.

Egypt: Hosni Mubarak gets life imprisonment

Cairo: Egypt's former president Hosni Mubarak has been found guilty of conspiracy in the killing of protesters during last year's uprising and has been given life imprisonment.

Mubarak, who was ferried to court on a stretcher by helicopter from hospital, was silent as Judge Ahmed Refaat handed down the life sentence to the 84-year-old former leader.

Egypt: Hosni Mubarak gets life imprisonment
Crowd outside the court shouted as they watched the court proceedings live on a giant screen.

Judge Ahmed Refaat also praised martyrs in Tahrir Square and said the court’s objective was to show the truth. Reports say that 60,000 pages of evidence were given. The judge further described the trial as a fair one.

Mubarak (84), along with former interior minister Habib al-Adly and six others, was on trial for ordering the deaths of some of the estimated 850 people.

The case also includes former president's sons, Alaa and Gamal. They are accused of killing peaceful protesters and wasting public funds.

The Interior Ministry had taken special measures to secure the premises of the court, where the trial took place.

The wall around the police academy in New Cairo, a satellite city around the capital, had already been raised to four metres in addition to another metre of barbed wire.

The court also refused to issue any new permits to cover the trial and kept the coverage exclusive for state-owned TV. The trial was broadcast live to the world.

Johan Santana Throws A No Hitter!

With 134 pitches Friday night, Johan Santana did what no other pitcher in the New York Mets’ 51-year history was able to do: He tossed a no-hitter. The St. Louis Cardinals were the victims in the 8-0 win that meant as much to the ace lefthander as it did to his team.

Given the fact that the Mets were one of only two major league franchises never to have had a no-hitter—the San Diego Padres still are on the clock—it is tough to decide whether the accomplishment is bigger for Santana or the franchise.Through eight innings, Santana had thrown 122 pitches while striking out seven and walking five. He faced the heart of the Cardinals' order in the top of the ninth, retiring Matt Holiday, Allen Craig and David Freese to make history in Queens.

Mexico vs Bosnia 2-1 Gol del Chicharito Hdz.

On a rainy Thursday night in Chicago, Mexico and Bosnia-Herzegovina played to an entertaining 2-1 win for Mexico after a goal in second-half injury time by Javier Hernandez. Unlike many matches for Mexico in the United States, this friendly featured a significant number of Bosnian fans, which certainly helped the atmosphere. Likewise, both teams showed good play and seemed eager to get a result.

Mexico began the match well as forward Aldo de Nigris beat defender Sanel Jahic just inside the box with a mix of luck and skill when Jahic slipped a bit on the slick field. De Nigris tried a speculative shot from an unfavorable angle at Bosnian goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, and the resulting save produced a rebound. Giovani dos Santos was in perfect position for the ball and tapped it in the net to put Mexico up 1-0 in the sixth minute. Both Andres Guardado and Hernandez made half-hour cameos in their respective returns from injury. Seconds before Chicharito entered the game, De Nigris scored from a fractionally offside position. Hernandez's strike half an hour later stood up. Ognjen Vranjes attempted a bicycle kick to clear the ball out of his box. Instead it trickled invitingly in front of his goalmouth, where Hernandez reacted quickest to score.

The international friendly was the second of three for El Tri in the United States. Previously, Mexico beat Wales 2-0 in New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. It will play Brazil in Dallas on June 3.

Kristen Wiig's Emotional 'SNL' Goodbye

As previously mentioned, neither NBC nor ‘Saturday Night Live‘ would formally confirm the departures of cast members Andy Samberg or Kristen Wiig, but last night’s Mick Jagger-hosted episode, was all the confirmation you’ll need.

In the last sketch of the night, a very loosely staged graduation piece with Mick Jagger playing himself as the principal of…OK it doesn’t really make sense as a sketch. But as an emotional goodbye to ‘SNL’s MVP Kristen Wiig, it was brilliant.

With the ‘SNL’ cast dressed like graduating students, Jagger specifically called Wiig to the staged to the cheers of the audience. Jagger announced to both Wiig and the audience, “Our music department got together to prepare a little song to say goodbye.” With the backing of Arcade Fire and the Foo Fighters, Jagger launched into a rendition of the Rolling Stones classic “She’s Like a Rainbow.

Wiig took turns dancing with each cast member, often sharing a kiss or a hug, and it was all par for the course until Wiig’s fellow female cast members joined her on stage and you could see the emotions start to flow. By the time Bill Hader joined her on stage, Wiig was openly crying on stage as she buried her head in his shoulder. It was a rare touching moment from Studio 8H.She danced in turn with Jagger, cast members and executive producer Lorne Michaels to the tune of the Rolling Stones classic "She's a Rainbow." Then the ensemble sang another Stones hit, "Ruby Tuesday," with its line, "still I'm gonna miss you."

Wiig appeared to be holding back tears.

Though NBC had made no prior announcement of her departure, it comes as no surprise. She starred in and co-wrote the hit comedy "Bridesmaids," and even before that had notable roles in "Friends With Kids," "Paul," "Adventureland" and "Knocked Up," among other films. She has six more in various stages of development.

Wiig's almost limitless range of characters on "SNL" has included neurotic attention-seeker Penelope; Kat, half of the musical duo Garth and Kat (alongside Fred Armisen); and such real-life notables as Bjork, Kathie Lee Gifford and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis have also been reported to be leaving "SNL," though Michaels recently said any decision on cast changes will wait until the summer.

David West, Padres Fan, Catches Foul Ball With Broken Arm

After the first month of the 2012 baseball season, Albert Pujols is homerless, Bobby Valentine seems to already be on the hot seat in Boston, the Orioles have been hovering around first place in the AL East and the fans' unorthodox foul ball attempts are increasing at a rapid pace. During Monday's contest between the Padres and Brewers at Petco Park, a routine foul ball sailed into the crowd behind the third base line. Luckily, one fan's quick reaction rewarded him with a souvenir, along with some much-deserved camera time.Despite suffering a fracture due to a football accident, David West's quick reflexes tipped the ball to himself before gracefully catching it one-handed, all while keeping his broken arm tightly secured with a sling. The only thing that possibly could have made this better would be if he caught one of Ryan Braun's three home run balls. Oh, and the Padres winning probably would have made it better too

Norwegian swimming champion Alexander Dale Oen dead

OSLO, Norway — Alexander Dale Oen, a world champion swimmer who was one of Norway's top medal hopes for the London Olympics, has died during training camp in Flagstaff, Ariz. He was 26.

Federation President Per Rune Eknes said Dale Oen died after suffering a cardiac arrest.

In a statement, the federation said the 100-meter breaststroke world champion was found collapsed on the floor of his bathroom late Monday. He was taken to the Flagstaff Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

"We're all in shock," Norway Coach Petter Loevberg said. "This is an out-of-the-body experience for the whole team over here. Our thoughts primarily go to his family who have lost Alexander way too early."

Hospital spokeswoman Starla Collins confirmed the death, but did not provide further details.

Dale Oen won the 100 breaststroke at the worlds in Shanghai last July and took silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.Norwegian Swimming Federation President Per Rune Eknes said he had suffered a cardiac arrest.

Oen's last tweet on Monday, as he was coming to the end of training in the US, said "2 days left of our camp up here in Flagstaff, then its back to the most beautiful city in Norway #Bergen".

Oen won a silver medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and was considered a strong hope for this summer's London Games.

His gold medal in Shanghai came shortly after Anders Behring Breivik murdered 77 people in Oslo and the island of Utoeya and at the time he described the events at home as a motivation for him. "We can't let this guy ruin the future for us," he said.

Derrick Rose ACL Knee Injury - 4/28/2012 2012 NBA Playoffs Game 1

CHICAGO -- Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season, the team announced Saturday.

Rose suffered the injury while trying to leap off his left foot in the lane with 1:22 left in Saturday's playoff game against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Rose was helped off the court before the Bulls sealed their 103-91 Game 1 win. Rose had 23 points, nine rebounds and nine assists when he was injured.

Team medical personnel immediately rushed out and tended to Rose for several minutes as he was writhing in pain near the baseline before helping him to the locker room. Rose was taken to the hospital, where MRI results confirmed the Bulls' worst fears.

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was asked about his philosophy of keeping his top players in late-game situations when the outcome is not in doubt. It's been a recurrent line of questioning for Thibodeau, especially concerning Rose, who has battled several injuries.Rose crumbled to the ground after he drove the lane with about 1:20 left and the Bulls leading by 12. He was going for a layup when he came to a jump-stop and seemed to change his mind as the 76ers' Spencer Hawes and Lavoy Allen rotated over, passing off to a teammate before an awkward landing.

ARMANDS ŠKELE IMPOSSIBLE SHOT

Byron Eaton's epic shot may not have made the difference during that t triple OT battle between Texas and Oklahoma State but it was certainly the one highlight stood out the most. With the shot clock winding down and the ball bouncing its way out of bounds, Oklahoma State's Eaton ran it down and put up a shot as he was falling down. Swish. The shot was so improbable that some dubbed it the "Miracle Shot."

It may have taken a few years, but Eaton's shot was just one-upped. In the final minutes of the Estonian League semifinal playoff match between Kalev/Cramo and Tarvas, 28-year-old Armands Skele of Kalev chased after a ball on its way out of bounds and tried to keep it in play. Not only did he manage to save it and avoid a team turnover, he launched it toward the hoop with his back to the basket. As he was falling out of bounds, the ball was dropping through the net. Swish!

Pep Guardiola to end reign as Barcelona coach in summer

Pep Guardiola will stand down as Barcelona manager at the end of the season after deciding not to renew his rolling one-year contract.
The 41-year-old, who was appointed in 2008 and has led the Catalan club to 13 trophies, will be succeeded by current assistant Tito Vilanova.
Barca look set to miss out to Real Madrid in La Liga and were knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea.
"The reason is simple: four years is enough," said Guardiola.
"I'm drained and I need to fill up. The demand has been very high and a manager must be strong." Guardiola is the most successful coach in Barca history, with three league titles, two Champions Leagues and a Copa del Rey among his haul.
He has overseen the rise of three-time world player of the year Lionel Messi, Xavi and Iniesta, while signing Fabregas from Arsenal.
Guardiola was particularly close to Messi - describing him as "the best ever" player - while the Argentina forward suggested Guardiola was the main factor behind Barca's recent success.
Messi was one of the players who opted to stay away from Guardiola's news conference.
Instead he posted a message on his Facebook page and stated he felt too much emotion to face the media glare.
Because of the emotions I feel I preferred not to be present at Pep's press conference and to stay away from the press because I know they will look for the pain on the players' faces," said Messi.
"It is something I decided not to show."

Gideon Sundback celebrated in a Google doodle

Google's latest doodle, a giant zipper running down the centre of the search engine's homepage, marks the birthday of Gideon Sundback, the Swedish-American electrical engineer most commonly associated with the development of the fastening device that revolutionised the clothing industry.

Before Sundback's intervention, the idea for a fastener based on interlocking teeth had circulated among engineers for more than 20 years but no one had perfected it.

His innovation was to place a dimple on the underside of each tooth and a nib on the top that would sit securely within the dimple of the tooth above it.

As a result, the join between two rows of teeth was then strong because no single tooth has enough room to move up or down and come apart. He also created the manufacturing machine for the new zipper.

Born on April 24, 1880, in Småland, Sweden, he moved to Germany following his studies and emigrated in 1905 to the US, where he started to work at Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

A year later, he was hired to work for the Universal Fastener Company in Hoboken, New Jersey, and became its head designer in 1909.

Sundback initially proposed the new zipper as a replacement for hook-and-eye fasteners on women's boots but it had become a regular feature for the flies of trousers and on dresses by the 1930s.

Van Persie wins PFA award

London - Arsenal striker Robin van Persie was named the Player of the Year by England's Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) at a ceremony on Sunday.

The 28-year-old Dutch international has scored 27 Premier League goals so far this season - his best return for the north London club - and was proud to be honoured by a poll of top-flight players.

"If other people are saying it, it is special, but it is even more special if your opponents are saying it," he said.

"It is very special because you are playing against them week in week out and every single player does everything to win and in the end if they make up their minds that I'm the best player it is a big honour."

Van Persie added none of his success would be possible but for the contribution of his fellow Gunners.

"Without them I could not have achieved it," he said. "For example Theo Walcott, he has given me more than 12 assists and I do really appreciate that."

Van Persie was originally deployed as a second striker by Arsenal after signing from Feyenoord in 2004 in a role made famous by fellow Dutch forward Dennis Bergkamp during his time with the club.

But despite his own initial doubts, van Persie has relished the role of leading Arsenal's attack since being switched to the centre forward position by manager Arsene Wenger.

"Now I am (confident). To be fair, when I first went there I wasn't really as confident and I wasn't really sure I could do it. It took a bit of time but after a couple of months a slowly realised I could do a good job there."

"If you look at the people I was in with then it is a great honour to get the award and hopefully there is more to come.

Both Walker and van Persie were included in the PFA's Premier League Team of the Year, which featured four players from title-chasing Manchester City.

England goalkeeper Joe Hart, defender Vincent Kompany and midfielders Yaya Toure and David Silva all featured in a side where Wayne Rooney was the only representative from champions Manchester United.

Tottenham had three men in the team, with Scott Parker and Wales winger Gareth Bale, last year's PFA Player of the Year, joining Walker in a side without any players from Chelsea, the only English club to reach the semi-finals of this season's Champions League.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Manchester United Vs Everton (4-4), Premier League 2012

Man United V Everton, April 2012: Video, highlights, as-it-happens commentary… Hello and welcome to Old Trafford where we have United facing Everton – a win here will be a massive step toward yet another title. But you have Everton in great form. Put aside the recent loss to Liverpool in the FA Cup semi, they are playing out of their skins. A classic encounter? More than ever!

47 mins: First period of attack going to Everton. a long-range free kick is flicked for a corner. It's bent in and this time it's Ferdinand to flicks it away. Neville setting up for a long throw... straight to united.

Second half underway - perfectly balanced. no changes to the line ups and so far it's Rooney and Jelavic with the goals.

HALFTIME 0-0

48 mins: Great ball in and Scholes gets a get to it, bouces about a bit and then Welbeck heads just wide. Video up soon.

47 mins: Distan done for a foul for pushing Rooney off the ball but it was shoulder-to-shoulder surely. Oh, a card too. Harsh.

42 mins: Nani now having a shot on goal. It seems that United have just kicked into another gear.

40 mins: Wayne Rooney scores! Video up. Rooney was on hand against his old club to score his 33rd goal for the season and 179th for the club, equal fourth all-time goalscorer for Manchester United with George Best and Dennis Viollet. Evra laid it down the line to Nani who checked back on his right boot and bent one in towards the goal, Wayne Rooney first to it with a glancing header past Howard in the Everton net.

34 mins: Scholes smashes a cleared header from a corner and it takes a wicked deflection with Howard adjusting just in time and hanging o to it. Video up.

33 mins: GOAL Everton! Jelavic gets his head to it at the back post and lobs it over de Gea giving him no chance. Video up.

31 mins: The efforts on Howard's goal are increasing in number if not quality. Video up of another one from Nani.

30 mins: Gibson with a mile of room outside the United penalty area and he accepts the invitation to shot and it's not a bad effort. Video up.

29 mins: A sweet turn from Rooney gets his around Jagielka and United moving in the right direction... he lays off to Nani but it gets trapped under his feet and the play breaks down.

27 mins: Great wee triangles from Everton and Ferdinand calls on all his experience to clear for a corner under pressure from Jelavic. Everton's first corner and de Gea shouts for it but doesn't get there... lucky it fell to a United player.

24 mins: First corner of the match to United but Wayne Rooney bends one right into the hands of the keeper Howard.

22 mins: United now streaming forward and it was Welbeck that took the ball away from Jagielka beautifully and in one fluid motion but his shot is covered by the defender.

19 mins: Neville sets up for a long throw and then goes short, back to Neville and he delivers with Valencia just doing enough to force Distin's header off target.

16 mins: Everton give Scholes some room from distance and they will do that at their peril... he positions the ball with a couple of touches and then lets fly. Video up.

14 mins: Rooney does well to get above Jagielka but can't get his header on target.

12 mins: Valencia bending a cross away from goal to the edge of the box but it's a tad behind Rooney and finds Nani loose at the back, one touch, a push to the right and he tries to bend one into the bottom corner, but wide. Then Nani finds half a yard of room in a similar position and cracks another one straight at Howard. Video up of both shots.

7 mins: Geez this is a real 'unlike United' start for united. passes being wellied into touch by yards, short balls going to opposition players... and because of it the 50:50s are falling for the men in blue too. Everton are pressing the game.

4 mins: A couple of stray passes from the usually precise United so far. Jelavic makes a great diagonal run and Osman finds him, he shoots as he's running on the angle and De Gea is forced into action. Video up. It's been mostly Everton.

2 mins: Casual start to the match until Everton's Pienaar plays the ball into Osman and he shoots, blocked by Ferdinand and he climbs again to head wide.

Everton on the ball... and we're underway...

Sir Alex applauds the crowd and we're nearly there folks... kick off...

Here are the official teams...

Man Utd (4-4-1-1): De Gea; Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra; Valencia, Scholes, Carrick, Nani; Rooney; Welbeck. Subs: Amos, Jones, Smalling, Park, Giggs, Young, Hernandez.

Kings Shock Canucks: Los Angeles Advances To 2nd Round After OT Goal From Jarett Stoll (VIDEO)

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Jarret Stoll beat Cory Schneider with a wrist shot at 4:27 of overtime to give the Los Angeles Kings a 2-1 victory over Vancouver on Sunday night, knocking out the top-seeded Canucks in five games in the Western Conference first-round series.

Stoll scored from the left wing after a turnover at Vancouver blue line. The forward skated in on a 2-on-1, but took the shot himself, picking the top-left corner above Schneider's blocker.

Brad Richardson tied it for Los Angeles at 3:21 of the third period, and Jonathan Quick made 26 saves.

Henrik Sedin opened the scoring for Vancouver with a power-play goal in the first period.

Schneider made 35 saves in his third straight start after Roberto Luongo lost the first two games.

The Kings will play the second-seeded St. Louis Blues in the second round.

The Canucks dropped out in the first round after leading the NHL in regular-season points for the second straight year. Last season, they lost to Boston in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals.

Vancouver's new second line of Ryan Kesler, Alex Burrows and Max Lapierre made a quick impression. Burrows fed Kesler from behind the net about a 90 seconds in, but Quick stopped the center's shot from the slot.

The Canucks then ran into early penalty trouble and didn't get another shot for 6 minutes before Lapierre put one on Quick. Vancouver killed penalties to Dan Hamhuis and Sedin, but couldn't get its power play going on its first advantage.

Later, Schneider robbed Richards on a rebound, snaring the puck with his catching glove. With just over 2 minutes left in the second, Quick stymied Daniel Sedin on a breakaway, lowering his right pad to block a snap shot. Sedin slammed his stick against the glass in frustration as he went to the bench.

Richardson drew the Kings even in the third, tapping in a pass from Drew Doughty. Doughty deked and circled around the Canucks' Keith Ballard and passed the puck back to Richardson from the end line. It was the first goal of the series for Richardson, who missed the first three games while recovering from an appendectomy.

Notes: The Canucks made just one lineup change, inserting winger Dale Weise in place of Zack Kassian, who was the principal acquisition in the trade that sent Cody Hodgson to Buffalo at the Feb. 27 deadline. ... Vancouver defenseman Sami Salo played his 100th career playoff game.

Louis Oosthuizen Sinks Double Eagle At Masters, Gets A Piece Of History (VIDEO)

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Even if he doesn't have a place in the champion's locker room at the Masters, Louis Oosthuizen can say he has a spot in the Albatross Club with Gene Sarazen.

Not a bad consolation prize: That shot by "The Squire" in 1935, after all, is widely credited with putting the Masters on the map.

Back then players weren't routinely hitting the ball so far, but Sarazen had the pluck to pull out a 4-wood from 235 yards and blast the ball over the creek that guards the 15th green at Augusta National. He made double-eagle, otherwise known as an albatross. It erased a three-shot deficit to Craig Wood in one swing. The two went to a playoff that Sarazen won.

On Sunday, Oosthuizen also got to the playoff on the strength of his double-eagle but he didn't make any more history.

Bubba Watson pulled off The Shot of the tournament – that twister from nowhere on the 10th hole in the playoff – and Oosthuizen walked home not with the green jacket, but with a good-looking `2' on the scorecard. It was only the fourth double-eagle in the history of the Masters and the first ever on the par-5 second at Augusta National.

Oosthuizen raised his hands, high-fived his caddie.

Watson, who was playing in the same group, told Oosthuizen he wanted to high-five him too, "but felt it might not have gone over too well," Oosthuizen said.

Oosthuizen's albatross now ranks No. 2 on the list of four that have come at Augusta National – ahead of Bruce Devlin's in 1967 on No. 8 and Jeff Maggert's in 1994 on No. 13, but still one notch behind Sarazen's. Had The Squire not made that shot, the historians say there's no telling where the Masters would be today.
