Johnny Knox Injury: Bears WR Suffers Back Injury, Is Carted Off After Brutal Hit (VIDEO)

Early in the first quarter of the Bears' game with the Seahawks at Soldier Field, Chicago wide receiver Johnny Knox suffered a frightening back injury. Facing a 3rd-and-6 situation during the first series of the team's second drive of the game, Bears quarterback Caleb Hanie fired a pass up the middle to Knox on a slant route. The third-year player reeled it in for a 17-yard gain. However, as Knox attempted to pick up yards after the catch, Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor dislodged the ball. As Knox dove to recover the fumble, he collided with Seahawks defensive end Anthony Hargrove.

The contact with Hargrove bent Knox's back at angle that looked as if very serious injury was a possibility. Initially, the Chicago crowd booed the fumble but soon changed its tune, realizing that Knox may be gravely injured. After being attended to by medical staff on the field for approximately 10 minutes, Knox was placed on a stretcher and carted off the field. He reportedly had movement in his hands and arms as he left the field.

On the play when Knox suffered the injury, the loose ball was eventually scooped up by Seahawks safety Earl Bennet. On the ensuing Seattle possession, Marshawn Lynch would score a rushing touchdown to stake the visitors to an early 7-0 lead.

Runaway Cart: Unmanned Electric Cart At Cowboys Stadium Hits People After High School Football Game (VIDEO)

ARLINGTON, Texas — Seven people suffered minor injuries when a runaway electric cart raced unmanned from an end zone to midfield and plowed into them after a high school football playoff game in Texas.

The incident happened after Spring Dekaney beat Cibolo Steele, 34-14, to win the Texas 5A Division II football title at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on Saturday night.

Of the seven treated for minor injuries at the stadium, one man with leg abrasions was taken to a nearby hospital for a precautionary examination, Arlington Fire Lt. Darrel Whitfield said Sunday.

The winning head coach was among those bowled over by the cart.

Separately, a Texas sports league official said a male staffer also was injured, not seriously, when the cart raced across field in a matter of seconds during onfield celebrations after the championship game. That official also declined identification.

It was unclear why or how the cart began moving under its own power. Stadium workers were picking up fluorescent orange sideline yard markers and pylons in one of the end zones after the game when the cart unexpectedly took off.

During its race across the field, the cart appeared to roll over the legs of some of those onfield. Afterward, televised broadcasts showed Amendola conducting another interview with a small streak of blood on his left forearm.

Kim Jong Il's Death

The AP has reported that Kim Jong Il passed in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang at the age of 69. He reportedly suffered a stroke in 2008, but had appeared healthy on trips around the Asian continent. The "Dear Leader" was beleived to have diabetes and heart disease, according to the AP.

While the exact future of the North Korean state remains uncertain, Reuters has reported that the country had already begun to transfer power to his son, Kim Jong-un.

While some Twitter users rejoiced over the longtime leader's death, others compared the fate of other remaining dictators, such as Cuba's Fidel Castro. During the last year, the world has seen the demise of Osama Bin Laden and Muammar Gaddafi.

Philippines storm kills hundreds in Mindanao flash floods

Flash floods triggered by a tropical storm in the southern Philippines have killed more than 430 people and left many more missing, officials say.

Many of the victims were asleep when it struck Mindanao island, hitting the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro.

Tens of thousands of people have fled to higher ground, the authorities say.

Benito Ramos, head of the national disaster rescue agency, said reports were still coming in and the casualty figures could rise.

Mr Ramos said the floodwaters had risen alarmingly fast overnight as people slept.

"Massive flooding had been reported over the region, especially in Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City," he said

Many people in Cagayan de Oro were trapped in their homes as floodwaters rose rapidly
Rivers burst their banks after 25mm of rain fell in 24 hours.

The Philippine National Red Cross Secretary General Gwen Pang said at least 430 people had been killed.

She said 215 people had been killed in Cagayan de Oro and 144 in Iligan.

Large areas were left without power and some domestic flights were cancelled as winds of up to 90 km/h (55mph) swept across the island.

A landslide killed at least five people in the east of the island, the national disaster agency said.

A military spokesman, Colonel Leopoldo Galon, said an entire army division - some 10,000 soldiers - was involved in the rescue efforts around Cagayan de Oro.

Forecasters said the eye of Tropical Storm Washi had passed close to Dipolog City, west of Iligan City, early on Saturday and it was now heading out into the Sulu Sea.

'Ellen Show' Proposal Rejected Video

A man named Jacob Waterdale proposed to his girlfriend live on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" Thursday, but, in an uncomfortable twist, the proposal was rejected.

Between sobs, his girlfriend, Jodie, cried out "I can't!" and "I'm sorry!"

But Ellen's reaction -- awkward laughter -- made viewers question whether or not the proposal was a prank. After the show aired, Twitter buzzed with the question.

TooFab.com reports that the proposal was indeed a hoax, and says "Jacob Waterdale" is actually an "Ellen Show" staffer who helped with a prank last year.

Ellen's YouTube page offers only this confusing explanation: "[The propsal] didn't seem to be going too well, but thankfully, it was the 12 Days of Giveaways!" Maybe the sting of rejection was relieved by the knowledge that Ellen would soon be showering her audience with gifts? Perhaps. But it's hard to tell if the "Ellen Show" proposal was a prank, given the awkwardness of the real-life failed proposals in our slideshow below.

So Cal Edison Shooting: 3 Dead, 2 Wounded, Shooter Confirmed Dead (VIDEO)

IRWINDALE, Calif. — A utility company office worker shot four colleagues Friday with a semi-automatic handgun, fatally wounding two before killing himself in a business park outside Los Angeles, police said.

"As far as we know there was one shooting suspect, period," said Baldwin Park police Capt. Michael Taylor.

The shooting around 1:30 p.m. at Southern California Edison offices forced a lockdown of a large office complex and nearby schools as officers from surrounding cities and the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's SWAT team responded.

"This is one of the most horrible days in our company's history," said Edison International Chairman and CEO Ted Craver. "We are deeply saddened by today's tragic events."

A man and a woman were wounded by gunfire and were listed in critical condition at local hospitals, said Sheriff's Lt. Holly Francisco.

Three men were killed in the shooting – two bodies were found on the scene and a third died en route to a hospital. Four of the shooting victims were company employees and the fifth was a contract worker.

Craver was careful not to provide identifying details for the victims, saying the company was still working to contact family members.

There was no immediate word on what prompted the gunfire.Cindy Gutierrez, the controller for that company, said employees there didn't hear gunshots and didn't realize anything was amiss until building management announced over the intercom that everyone should stay indoors.

Two nearby schools were locked for about two hours after the shooting and no one on the campuses was hurt.

Irwindale is a small industrial city of about 1,400 residents in the San Gabriel Valley, 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It is home to the Irwindale Speedway auto racetrack and large rock and gravel quarries.

Dutch Catholic church sexually abused thousands of children panel says

AMSTERDAM — Tens of thousands of children have been victims of sexual abuse by the Roman Catholic Church in the Netherlands since 1945, an independent commission said on Friday, criticising what it called the church's cover-up and cultural silence.
The commission estimated that 10,000 to 20,000 minors were sexually abused while in the care of Catholic institutions such as orphanages, boarding schools and seminaries, between 1945 and 1981, with offences ranging from the very mild to the serious, including rape. After 1981 there were few church-run homes for minors.
It also said that from the end of World War Two until 2010, "several tens of thousands of minors were subjected to mild, serious and very serious forms of inappropriate sexual behaviour in the Roman Catholic Church".

"The (religious) orders were dealing with cases. The idea that people did not know it and administrators did not know it cannot be maintained," said Wim Deetman, a Protestant former education minister and former mayor of The Hague who led the commission.
The report criticised the church for protecting paedophile priests as it tried to put the reputation of the church above care and concern for the victims.
Most of the cases involved mild to moderate abuse, such as touching, but it said that it estimated there were "several thousand" instances of rape.
"Everyone can be shocked that this history has come in this magnitude. Everyone can be taken aback that the Church has lied about this and covered it up," Guido Klabbers from the KLOKK lobby group of child abuse victims told public broadcaster NOS.

Christopher Hitchens Dead Legendary Writer Dies At 62

Christopher Hitchens died Thursday in Houston. He was 62. The legendary writer was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2010.

His death was announced by Vanity Fair.

Hitchens was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England in 1949. His father, Ernest, a commander in the British Royal Navy, and his mother, Yvonne, a bookkeeper, scrimped and saved so that he could attend the independent Leys School in Cambridge, and later Balliol College, Oxford. They were determined that he would receive a top-notch education and join the upper class, The Guardian reported.

During his time at university, Hitchens studied philosophy, politics and economics, but the more he learned, the angrier he became. Hitchens' disgust with racism and opposition to the Vietnam War led him to the political left. He would eventually join the International Socialists, a faction of the anti-Stalinist left, and participate in political protests against the war.

Faith is the surrender of the mind; it's the surrender of reason, it's the surrender of the only thing that makes us different from other mammals," Hitchens said. "It's our need to believe, and to surrender our skepticism and our reason, our yearning to discard that and put all our trust or faith in someone or something, that is the sinister thing to me. Of all the supposed virtues, faith must be the most overrated."

Even after being diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus in 2010, Hitchens refused to turn to a deity or organized religion for comfort. He made it clear that if anyone ever claimed he had converted at the end of his life, it would be either a lie propagated by the religious community or an effect of the cancer and treatment that made him no longer himself.

"The entity making such a remark might be a raving, terrified person whose cancer has spread to the brain. I can't guarantee that such an entity wouldn't make such a ridiculous remark, but no one recognizable as myself would ever make such a remark," he said.

"There will never be another like Christopher. A man of ferocious intellect, who was as vibrant on the page as he was at the bar," said Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter. "Those who read him felt they knew him, and those who knew him were profoundly fortunate souls."

Minnesota Courthouse Shooting: 3 Injured In Courthouse Shooting, Suspect In Custody

GRAND MARAIS, Minn. -- A local prosecutor is among three people who were injured during a shooting inside a northern Minnesota courthouse.

Three people were shot and injured inside a small northern Minnesota courthouse on Thursday, and a suspect was quickly taken into custody, authorities said.

Gunfire was reported around 4 p.m. at the Cook County Courthouse in Grand Marais, a town about 110 miles northeast of Duluth, State Public Safety spokesman Doug Neville said. No details have been released about the suspect or victims, though no other suspects were being sought.he two-story courthouse, which has just one courtroom, has no metal detectors and visitors aren't searched when they enter the building, Cook County Commissioner Fritz Sobanja said.

"As far as I know, there's no checking for knives or any of that stuff," Sobanja said.

The only proceeding on Thursday's court calendar was a jury trial that began Monday for Daniel Sidney Schlienz, who had been charged with criminal sexual conduct and nonconsensual sex contact. A phone message left at Schlienz's home wasn't immediately returned.

Grand Marais is a town of about 1,300 residents along the shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota's far northeastern tip, near the Canadian border.

James Harrison Suspended: Steelers Linebacker Out 1 Game For Colt McCoy Hit

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison has carved out a niche as one of the NFL's most feared defenders over the last five years by straddling the line between clean and dirty play.

After one dangerous hit too many, the league apparently has seen enough.

The NFL suspended Harrison for one game following his helmet-to-facemask hit on Browns quarterback Colt McCoy last Thursday, making Harrison the first player to miss game time as a penalty under the league's revamped policy on such collisions.

Harrison's agent Bill Parise said Tuesday afternoon Harrison has already filed an appeal and expects it to be heard later this week by Art Shell or Ted Cottrell, jointly appointed by the NFL and the players' association to hear such cases.

They'll have to determine Harrison's intent when he laid out McCoy late in the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh's 14-3 victory. The 2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year was penalized for roughing the passer on the play and said Monday he believed the hit didn't warrant further punishment. He's been quiet this season following a turbulent spring in which he took shots at NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, calling Goodell a "crook" and a "devil."

Harrison later apologized, saying his comments were "inappropriate," though both he and his teammates have been critical of the league's crackdown on what it considers dangerous and overly aggressive play.

The Steelers were the only team in the league to vote against the new collective bargaining agreement in August, citing the lack of a proper appeals process regarding fines and suspensions as one of their main concerns.

Now Harrison will need to rely on that process to have his suspension reduced. The odds of a successful appeal are small. Shell declined to reduce the two-game ban given to Detroit Lions nose tackle Ndamukong Suh after Suh stomped on an opponent's arm last month.

Though there has been an emphasis to play by the rules, the Steelers have been fined at least 13 times for illegal hits this season. Safety Ryan Clark was fined $40,000 after being flagged for helmet-to-helmet hits in successive weeks.

Tomlin refused to take issue with the fines or the penalties and doesn't believe it will affect the way the NFL's second-ranked defense plays the game.

Girl In China Gets Run Over By SUV, Still Goes To School (VIDEO)

After reportedly throwing a temper tantrum on her way to school by sitting down in the middle of the street, a SUV ran over a little girl in eastern China, the Associated Press reports.

In an amazing group effort, bystanders lifted the SUV off the 5-year-old child, who was then sent to the hospital. Unfortunately for her, her mother still made her go to school the same day.

Last month, video surfaced of what could be the world's most dangerous to-school commute. According to the Telegraph, the journey is a total of 120 miles, 50 of which cannot be accessed by vehicles. It also includes a particularly dangerous stretch, where the path narrows to only a few inches over a 1,000-foot-high cliff.

Stories like these draw heightened attention to what many like NBC's Rehema Ellis have deemed "a whole culture that really values education."

"Kids there love learning," NBC's Rehema Ellis said. "And in many ways, their success in school is a direct consequence of a whole culture that really values education."

This incident comes after "horrifying" footage surfaced of a 2-year-old girl in China being run over twice, and left to die by passersby. The video shows at least a dozen people walk by the child, clearly noticing her, but not stopping to help. Luckily for the girl in the video above, the two didn't share the same fate.

Justin Bieber Gropes Selena Gomez

The pair were spotted out and about showing their affection for one another in Washington, D.C. today. The show will benefit the Children's National Medical Center and also featured performances by Jennifer Hudson, the Band Perry, Victoria Justice and Cee Lo Green.

Tom Brady, Bill O'Brien Argue: Patriots QB Curses At Offensive Coordinator

Setting the tempo with a no huddle offense, the New England Patriots marched down to the Washington Redskins' four-yard line midway through the fourth quarter on Sunday. Already leading, 34-27, the Pats were looking to put the game away when Tom Brady took a third-down snap in the shotgun formation. The two-time Super Bowl MVP dropped back and then threw a pass intended for Tiquan Underwood, who was crossing the back of the end zone. But Redskins cornerback Josh Wilson picked off the pass, giving his offense another chance to level the score.

After the play, CBS cameras caught something even more unusual than a miscue by Brady in the red zone, the New England quarterback lost his cool, erupting at one of his coaches on the sideline. Seemingly in disagreement over the ill-fated pass to Underwood, Brady and offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien got into a heated argument on the sideline. At one point, the Patriots star appears to scream "No sh**!" toward the coach, who didn't back down against the team's star player. In fact, O'Brien brought plenty of his own fire to the exchange as the 34-year-old Brady sat on the bench drinking water. Eventually, head coach Bill Belichick had to intervene and calm everyone down.

After the Pats escaped with a win, the two seemed to clear the air with a hug and Brady accepted the blame during his postgame press conference.

"I threw a pretty bad interception so he wasn't happy about it. It was probably a long line of coaches and players that were pretty pissed at me after that, but Billy got to me first and he let me have it," Brady said. "I deserved it. We're both pretty emotional guys. That's what I deserve. You make bad plays, you're supposed to get yelled at by your coaches."

Double-Amputee Soldier Skydives With Dog

Jumping out of a plane is certainly a memorable activity. Going skydiving with your dog is even more impressive. But one brave U.S. solider trumps both of those feats.

The unidentified soldier in the video, who brought his military working dog Axe along for the ride, is also a double-amputee who lost his feet in combat.

Gizmodo reports the man told DefenseTech, "I am still rocking! For those who haven't heard, I was blown up, with my [military working dog], Axe, Feb 17th of this year. I lost both of my feet, and was back to work in July."

Axe isn't the only dog that goes skydiving. This summer, a pug from California named Otis completed his 64th tandem jump with his owner.

In even weirder skydiving news, a couple in California raised eyebrows for performing a midair sex stunt while skydiving.

Click here for pictures of other heroic military working dogs. Sadly, about five percent of the U.S. military's workings dogs "are developing some form of canine PTSD."

Dancing with the Stars": The Kardashians dominate the finals

CBS) Would she scream? Would she shout obscenities? Would she stand up and declare: "It should have been me!" This was the question that burned through most intestines at last night's finals of "Dancing with the Stars."

No, the "she" I am referring to is not Nancy Grace. Nor is it Cher. It is the great former "Dancing with the Stars" contestant, Kim Kardashian, who turned up to offer her little brother Rob a fearsome - if not flying - buttress.

Pictures: "Dancing with the Stars" Season 13

Where previous episodes had been the equivalent of a sloth after a very large bowl of menudo, suddenly we were only given one hour to enjoy the finalists offering two dances - one which they hadn't so far danced in the competition, and the other a vastly unpredictable freelance.

As everyone else in the audience sat, the Kardashian clan rose as one to applaud, high five and get on their cell phones to offer exclusive interviews. I might just be mistaken about that last part.

Smirnoff, partner to Martinez, wanted to do a lift in which he hooked her neck. This seemed a little wishful, as Smirnoff has already endured serious surgery on her neck. In final rehearsal, Smirnoff began to panic, to weep and to generally perturb anyone watching.

Theirs was a salsa-inspired piece, with a little hip-hopping thrown in, just in case someone under 45 had switched to the wrong channel or supped a little too much Bacardi Breezer.

This was clearly the most enjoyable of the freestyles, even if Martinez was still a slave to the lack of rhythm.

Yale Tailgate Party Accident: Truck Strikes Yale-Harvard Tailgaters, Killing 1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A driver of a U-Haul truck carrying beer kegs through a tailgating area before the Yale-Harvard game Saturday suddenly accelerated, fatally striking a 30-year-old Massachusetts woman and injuring two other women, police said.

It's not clear why the driver sped up, New Haven Police spokesman David Hartman said. The truck then crashed into other U-Haul vans in the lot, an open playing field used for pre-game tailgating parties before Yale home games in New Haven.

Tim Walker of Pawtucket, R.I., said he was grilling sirloin tips when he heard the crash behind him. He turned and saw two people lying on the ground.

People huddled around them trying to help, according to a video that appears to have been recorded shortly after the accident and posted online. "We're not getting a pulse," said someone crouched near one victim, while the cameraman notes the ambulance hasn't arrived.

After emergency officials arrived, Walker said, he saw one victim being given CPR as she was taken away.

"The driver looked shocked. Absolutely shocked," Walker said. Police have not said whether alcohol was a factor.

"He didn't look intoxicated or anything like that," Walker added. "He had a dazed look like he had just hit someone."

Hartman said the driver was in police custody.

He said the woman who was killed was pronounced dead at about 10:15 a.m. at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Police did not immediately release her identity. The fans had gathered for the 128th game of the Ivy League rivalry, which Harvard won 45-7 for its fifth straight victory over Yale. Three hours after the accident, the loud tailgating continued in the lot, with music blaring from large speakers and fans grilling hot dogs, sausage and hamburgers. Some students danced on top of other rental trucks.

The accident scene was cordoned off by yellow police tape, and a dozen numbered evidence placards were on the ground. The three rental trucks involved in the accident were still at the scene, stacked one against another from the collision.

At halftime of the game, the public address announcer at Yale Bowl informed the crowd of the accident and the woman's death, noting that it had been confirmed by the New Haven Police. He asked spectators to stand and observe a moment of silence.

Penn State Loses To Nebraska In First Game Without Joe Paterno

The Penn State players left the field with their heads bowed, the fans mostly silent.

A lifetime worth of emotions was crammed into the past week. Shock, rage, regret and, now, exhaustion. The child sex-abuse scandal involving former assistant Jerry Sandusky cost Joe Paterno his job and, no doubt, scarred Penn State's soul.

A football game on a brilliant autumn afternoon won't erase it.It was, however, a start.
"We've had better weeks in our lives, obviously," Paterno's son Jay, the quarterbacks coach, said after No. 12 Penn State's 17-14 loss to No. 19 Nebraska on Saturday. "The world's kind of turned upside down, but I think our kids were resilient."
The game was a combination of pep rally, cleansing and tribute, a way to acknowledge the past and take a step into the future. Affection for Penn State and Paterno was abundantly visible from players, fans and, yes, coaches. So was support for abuse victims, the kind of empathy many felt was missing in the days after news of the scandal broke.

"I said, `You and I, in my life, haven't always seen eye to eye. But generally speaking, it's (because) I had to grow up, to catch up to make eye contact with you,'" Jay Paterno recalled. "There were a lot of lessons that I learned from him."

At Joe Paterno's house nearby, a small clutch of TV cameras and reporters stood outside. Two people walked to the door, rang the bell and left when no one answered. On the lawn was a pair of homemade signs facing the house. One said, "We Love You Joe, Thank You" and the other, "Thanks Joe."

A small American flag was planted nearby.

"There's not going to be closure anytime soon," said Brandon Hewitt, a senior from York, Pa. "I feel horrible what happened to the kids. I feel bad for what happened about Joe. But today was about football, and it was heartwarming to see the university rally around a terrible time."

Mexican minister who fought drug cartels killed in crash

As Mexican President Felipe Calderon mourned the loss of his top minister in the nation's war against drug cartels, he pledged that the investigation into Friday's helicopter crash that killed the Cabinet member and all seven others aboard would be transparent and timely.
In a national address Friday, Calderon said authorities don't know the exact cause of the crash south of Mexico City that killed Interior Minister Jose Francisco Blake Mora, but he added that investigators will look at all possible angles.
A total of eight people -- not nine as earlier indicated by a government spokeswoman -- were killed in the crash, which occurred in a rural area south of the nation's capital.
The incident evoked comparisons to a 2008 plane crash that also killed the country's then-interior minister. That crash, in a luxurious Mexico City neighborhood, was later determined to be an accident caused by turbulence. The Learjet carrying the minister and others was following a commercial airliner too closely, authorities said.

"Calderon is in the last year of his presidency, so Mexico is entering a presidential election year just as the United States is. President Calderon has been criticized because the number of persons killed has escalated during his presidency and so people see him as failed. I think that's a harsh judgment," Zamora said.
"He inherited a country, especially in the northern states, that is being destabilized by the drug cartels. He's started employing the army, which hasn't been used much domestically, to fight the drug cartels," Zamora said.
While Blake Mora was well regarded by U.S. officials, his loss won't devastate the Calderon administration, said Pamela K. Starr, associate professor of international relations at the University of Southern California.
"I think there's an inevitability that there will be speculation that organized crime was involved in this, but it seems highly unlikely to me that indeed will be the case," Starr said, noting how the helicopter crashed under foggy conditions in a remote area.
"He was very highly thought of both within Mexico and with his counterparts in the United States," Starr said of Blake Mora. "With that said, he has not been one of the central figures in the battle against drug cartels in Mexico. The lead has been taken more by the federal police and the president himself, along with the military and the prosecutor's office."

Garrett McNamara Sets Record Surfer Rides 90 Foot Wave (VIDEO)

Garrett McNamara is a self-described "extreme surfer." Interestingly enough, this may be the understatement of the century. The American professional surfer broke the world record for "Largest Wave Surfed" by conquering a 90 foot behemoth. "Extreme" doesn't quite do this feat justice., the previous world record was set by Mike Parsons in 2008 for surfing a paltry 77-foot wave.McNamara's amazing feat took place in Praia do Norte, Nazare, Portugal, during the ZON North Canyon Project.

According to the Portuguese Hydrographic Institute, as reported in Drift Magazine, "the proximity of the 'Nazare Canyon' to Praia do Norte creates a situation that greatly increases the swells intensity.""Greatly increases" is probably another understatement."I feel so blessed and honoured to have been invited to explore this canyon and its special town," McNamara told Surfer Today. Oklahoma Earthquake: 5.6 Magnitude Temblor Hits State

OKLAHOMA CITY -- A 5.6 magnitude earthquake has rocked central Oklahoma, rattling buildings across a wide area and a stadium where a football game had just concluded, but authorities said they had no immediate reports of injuries or major damages

The quake was a latest in a series of quakes to hit the state in a 24-hour period, including a 4.7-magnitude quake early Saturday.

Michelann Ooten, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management, said no injuries were reported to emergency management officials and she had no reports of major damages.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported from Golden, Colo., on its website that it monitored a 5.6 magnitude quake at 10:53 p.m. local time Saturday and said it was centered about 44 miles east-northeast of Oklahoma City. It had initially reported the temblor as a 5.2 magnitude quake.

If the initial reading of 5.6 magnitude holds, the quake would be the state's strongest on record. A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck El Reno, just west of Oklahoma City, in 1952 and another of about that magnitude struck in northeastern Indian Territory in 1882, according to USGS records.

In Stillwater, a college football game had recently ended Saturday night when the quake shook a stadium as Kansas State played at Oklahoma State.

In Muskogee, retired advertising and public relations executive Robert Rhea said he felt his home rocking for about 15 to 20 seconds.

"Oh man, it just about shook this old man out of his TV chair," said Rhea, 70, speaking with The Associated Press by telephone. He said nothing broke in his home but the state was on edge after being rattled by lesser quakes during the day.

Arsenal 3 - 0 West Brom

Robin van Persie scored one goal and made two more as Arsenal secured a fourth consecutive Premier League win by cruising past West Bromwich Albion.

The Gunners were not at their fluent best before the break but led 2-0 after Van Persie's tap-in and a Thomas Vermaelen shot from Van Persie's pass.

Arsenal dominated the second period and Vermaelen, Gervinho and Aaron Ramsey all went close.

Mikel Arteta's fine strike sealed a routine win after a sweeping move.

Nigeria: Boko Haram Suicide Attack Killed Dozens

LAGOS, Nigeria — At least 67 people died in a wave of bombings and shootings carried out in northeast Nigeria overnight, officials said Saturday, as frightened mourners left their homes to begin burying their dead.

A radical Muslim sect known locally as Boko Haram claimed responsibility Saturday for the attacks, which represent the most coordinated and wide-ranging assault yet in their increasingly bloody sectarian fight with Nigeria's weak central government. The sect, which wants the strict implementation of Shariah law across the nation of more than 160 million people, promised to carry out more attacks.

The fighting centered around Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state, Nigerian Red Cross official Ibrahim Bulama said. The attack started Friday with a car bomb exploding outside a three-story building used as a military office and barracks in the city, with many uniformed security agents dying in the blast, Bulama said.

Gunmen then went through the town, blowing up a First Bank PLC branch and attacking at least three police stations and some churches, leaving them in rubble, he said. Gunfire continued through the night and gunmen raided the village of Potiskum near the capital as well, witnesses said, leaving at least two people dead there.

On Saturday morning, people began hesitantly leaving their homes, seeing the destruction left behind, including military and police vehicles burned by the gunmen, with the burned corpses of the drivers who died in their seats.

Bulama spoke to The Associated Press by telephone Saturday morning from a common Muslim burial ground in the city as his family buried a relative and friend, a police officer who died after suffering a gunshot wound to the head in the fighting.

"There's that fear that something might possibly happen again," he said.

State government officials did not respond to repeated requests for comment Saturday.

The attacks around Damaturu came after four separate bombings struck Maiduguri, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) east. One blast detonated around noon outside the El-Kanemi Theological College where parents had gathered. Police said others had entered the college grounds to attend Friday .Boko Haram's attacks occurred ahead of Eid al-Adha, or the feast of sacrifice, when Muslims around the world slaughter sheep and cattle in remembrance of Abraham's near-sacrifice of his son. Police elsewhere in the country had warned of violence ahead of the celebration in Nigeria, a country largely split between a Christian south and a Muslim north. On Wednesday, police in Maiduguri had said they broke up a plot to bomb the city over the holiday.

Boko Haram apparently has split into three factions, increasing the danger for Nigeria, the AP has learned. One faction remains moderate and welcomes an end to the violence, another wants a peace agreement with rewards similar to those offered to a different militant group in 2009.

The third faction, though, refuses to negotiate and remains the most radical. This faction is in contact with al-Qaida's North Africa branch and likely the Somalia-based terror group al-Shabab, a diplomat said on condition of anonymity according to embassy orders.

That sect likely is responsible for the increasingly violent and sophisticated attacks carried out in the sect's name. In August, Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a suicide car bombing at the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria's capital, which killed 24 people and left another 116 wounded.

It is feared more than 10 people have died in a 27-vehicle crash on the M5 near Taunton, Somerset.More than 40 people were injured in the crash, near junction 25 northbound at about 20:30 GMT on Friday, which police said led to a "massive fireball".

Peyton Hillis Injury: Browns Running Back Likely Out Again And Some Suspect Madden Curse

The Associated Press is reporting that Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis re-injured his hamstring during practice on Friday. He had just returned to practice on Thursday after sitting out for a week because of the same hamstring.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Hillis will be listed as "questionable" on the team's injury report but will miss at least this week's game.Hillis has had a 2011 season to forget thus far. Not only has he come under fire as a result of his contract dispute with the Browns, but he has barely made an impact on the field. He was criticized for sitting out the second game of the season with strep throat, a decision some believe to be related to his dissatisfaction with his financial situation. Even when Hillis has played, he hasn't been nearly as effective as he was last year, rushing for nearly a full yard less per carry and accumulating no 100-yard games thus far.

A recent Yahoo! Sports report has claimed that Hillis is losing support in the Browns locker room, citing one veteran player who said of Hillis, "Last year, Peyton was such a positive, inspirational force on our team -- but now he's like a different guy."

Some are invoking the "Madden Curse" to explain Hillis' poor performance. According to those who believe, any player featured on the cover of the Madden branded football video game will not live up to expectations the following season. After Hillis was voted by fans to appear on the cover, he insisted he would break the supposed curse.

"For people to believe in this so-called curse, I can't wait to prove people wrong," he told ESPN last April. "From what I believe and where I am in my spiritual life, it would be good to prove them wrong in that sense."

But upon news of this latest injury, many people, including the NFL's official Twitter page, chalked it up to being another example of the Madden curse in action.

Whales Surprise Surfer Near Santa Cruz, California Beach (VIDEO)

A surfer and kayakers got quite a surprise when two humpback whales lunged out of the water and nearly came crashing down upon them near Santa Cruz, California.

Barbara Roettger, the woman who shot the video, told ABC News that the group was about a quarter mile from shore when the whales surfaced. Roettger was only 20 feet away from encounter.

According to ABC News, "scientists believe weather patterns have driven fish closer to shore this year and brought the feeding whales with them."

The surprising encounter captured in the video is not the first one in the waters near Santa Cruz. The Associated Press reports that the U.S. Coast Guard has been monitoring a pod of humpbacks that have come within a mile of shore looking for food.

Roettger admitted that whale encounters like hers can be dangerous. "We were crazy to be out there, " she told ABC News. "You're a sitting duck, basically."

Officials are concerned for human safety, especially for kayakers and boaters who try to get a closer look at the creatures. No human injuries have been reported, but "at least one sailboat was damaged this week when it struck a whale."

As for the whales, many groups have spoken out against boats coming too close to the mammals.

Whaling, an historically lucrative business around the world, has come under increasing scrutiny in recent decades. According to the Associated Press, Japan still catches a small number of whales annually, in a "research program opposed by activists who call it commercial whaling in disguise."

Despite an international moratorium on whaling in 1986, Iceland continues the practice. This summer, the U.S. threatened Iceland with "trade and diplomatic sanctions" for its ramped up commercial whaling that was resumed in 2006.

Cal Clutterbuck Punches Referee: Wild Player Hits Linesman While Fighting Canucks' Maxim Lapierre (VIDEO)

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The fight between Minnesota's Cal Clutterbuck and Vancouver's Maxim Lapierre was intense enough to get an official involved.

Literally.

Clutterbuck was tied up with Lapierre in front of the Canucks bench late in Thursday's game when the Wild forward swung blindly and inadvertently hit linesman Darren Gibbs in the face instead of Lapierre.

Gibbs didn't appear to be shaken. But Clutterbuck was fired up. He drew a 10-minute misconduct and declined to comment after the game.

Lapierre and teammate Dan Hamhuis also were given misconducts. Hamhuis appeared to grab Clutterbuck from the bench while Lapierre had him in a bear hug. Wild coach Mike Yeo said Clutterbuck was "just trying to protect himself" and didn't express concern about discipline from the NHL

Trent Glaze, Student Who Uses Wheelchair, Scores Touchdown In Final Game (VIDEO)

Trent Glaze always gives 110 percent.

The Ohio high school student, who has muscular dystrophy and uses a wheelchair, always dreamed of playing football. But physical limitations made it impossible, ABC reported.

That didn't stop him from joining the Fairfield Union High School football team, according to his interview with ABC.

After the clock ran out on Friday's game against Teay's Valley High, Glaze had one of his biggest wishes come true, according to the Lancaster Eagle Gazette. Both teams took the field for one last play, and the senior wheeled himself into the end zone for a touchdown.

"I still get butterflies thinking about it," he told local station 10TV.

Glaze was also named a team captain this year, and even took the school's homecoming king crown, according to the local station. But nothing seems to top this experience.

"It was his opportunity to shine," Fairfield Union coach Tom McCurdy told 10TV. "He's my right-hand man. He's always telling me what we need to do [and] what needs to improve."

According to the Gazette, McCurdy says Glaze one day hopes to become a coach himself, and he could see it happening. "His goal is he wants to coach. He listens hard to what we try to teach, and he gets after the guys," the coach said.

Hendrick Plane Crash: NASCAR Owner Rick Hendrick In Private Plane Crash In Key West

A small jet carrying the owner of NASCAR's top team and his wife lost its brakes and crash landed at a Key West, Fla., airport Monday evening, and the couple suffered minor injuries, officials said.

The Gulfstream 150 aircraft ran off the runway at the Key West International Airport Monday at 7:45 p.m. Rick and Linda Hendrick, a pilot and co-pilot were all taken to Lower Keys Medical Centers. The Hendricks had minor injuries and the pilot and co-pilot were taken in as a precaution, said county airport director Peter Horton.

The plane is registered to Jimmie Johnson Racing II Incorporated in Charlotte, N.C. Johnson is a five-time defending NASCAR champion and drives for Hendrick Motorsports, which Rick Hendrick owns.

Besides Johnson, Hendrick also fields cars for four-time champion Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin. The team recently celebrated its 199th career victory in the Sprint Cup Series.

In 2004, a plane Hendrick owned crashed en route to a race in Martinsville, Va., killing all 10 onboard. That included Hendrick's son, Ricky, his brother and twin nieces.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the pilot and co-pilot radioed that the plane had no brakes upon landing in Key West. Horton said the plane ran off the runway, and then 100 feet beyond a 600-foot safety area that was finished in May.

"If we hadn't done that, it likely would have been a different story," Horton said of the safety area that is meant as a runway overrun space.

Photographs of the crash show the plane largely intact and with its nose resting on the ground about 20 feet in front of a chain-linked airport boundary fence.

Watch A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas Online Streaming

Last week I watched two classic horror movies: “The Thing” and “The Exorcist.” Watching John Carpenter’s “The Thing,” just further reminded me of how crappy the recent prequel was. With its spooky score, good looking practical effects, and more fully formed characters, Carpenter’s story is far superior. If you were thinking about seeing the prequel, skip it, so you can stay in and watch Carpenter’s version.

Even though I didn’t find myself grossed out by any of the nasty behavior of the possessed little girl (Linda Blair) in “The Exorcist,” I really appreciated the eerie music, the spectacular character development, and the visual skill with which director William Friedkin tells this tale. Friedkin reminds us that horror movies can be disgusting and freaky, but that the best ones also feature characters you can get invested in.

This week promises two comedies and a crime thriller at the box office. You’ll have the chance to see the Cannabis comedy “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,” the lighthearted robbery romp “Tower Heist,” and the cop drama “The Son of No One.”

Muammar Gaddafi Killed, Captured In Sirte

Following the capture of Muammar Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte, contradictory reports suggest that Colonel Gaddafi may have been killed or captured in Libya.

Al Jazeera and Libyan state television are reporting that the Libyan dictator has been killed during a gunbattle in Sirte. A senior National Transitional Council official, Abdel Majid, told Reuters by telephone that Gaddafi has died of wounds suffered during his capture in Sirte. Reuters reports that he was wounded in both legs as he "tried to flee in a convoy which NATO warplanes attacked."In Tripoli, celebrations are already underway with gunfire and honking. "We've heard quite a lot of celebratory gunfire," Caroline Hawley reports for the BBC.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton visited Libya on Tuesday to offer a new aid package. She told students during a gathering in Tripoli, "We hope [Gaddafi] can be captured or killed soon so that you don't have to fear him any longer."

Gaddafi was ousted from power in August, and his whereabouts have been unknown for months. The Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, accused Libya's former ruler of crimes against humanity.

Reuters is also reporting that an official from the National Transitional Council, Libya's interim government, has confirmed the death of Abu Bakr Yunis Jabr, Gaddafi's Minister of Defense.
